ATP Picks: Munich, Belgrade and Estoril

The BMW Open is the first of five German tournaments on the 2011 ATP World Tour calendar, staged in Munich. The last German to win was Philipp Kohlschreiber in 2007, but watch out for Florian Mayer, who I have had down for a break-through win for some time.

Stan The Man

None of the top seeded players are bringing much form into this tournament so it could be a crap-shoot. Try to catch, newly Germanic, Dustin Brown play who hits hard and serve-volleys.

Surface: Clay
Top 1st Round Match:
Ivan Dodig vs. Philip Petzschner
Dark Horse:
Florian Mayer
Defending Champion:
Mikhail Youzhny
Wildcards: Andreas Beck, Dustin ‘Hash’ Brown, Matthias Bachinger
Late Withdrawals:
Xavier Malisse
My pick:
Stanislas Wawrinka

A brand new tournament in newly tennis-mad Serbia, Nole is playing and I expect him to win it along with a strong showing from all the Serbs present. Montanes is not defending in Estoril so I expect he will be a factor here.

Blaz Kavcic

Gulbis is a wildcard in every sense, but I think he will put some wins together, but it’s all about Novak plus the return of the mighty Gonzo!

Surface: Clay
Top 1st Round Match:
Kei Nishikori vs. Janko ‘The Reader’ Tipsarevic
Dark Horse:
Blaz Kavcic
Defending Champion:
Sam Querry
Wildcards: Ernests Gulbis, Fernando Gonzalez
Late Withdrawals:
My pick:
Novak Djokovic

Defending champ Montanes is playing in Serbia and much like Munich, few players are showing much form, so all to play for. Del Po plays and I expect him to rip through his quarter and Soderling, who suffered an early exit against Ivan Dodig will try to make amends. Raonic and Kevin Anderson I like on clay surprisingly, so a good bet to perform well.

Gilles Simon

Surface: Clay
Top 1st Round Match:
Kevin Anderson vs. Thiemo De Bakker
Dark Horse:
Milos ‘Big Baby’ Raonic
Defending Champion:
Albert Montanes
Wildcards:
Joao Sousa, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gastao Elias
Late Withdrawals:
Benjamin Becker, Florent Serra, Richard Berankis
My pick:
Gilles Simon
